An untended candle sparked a fire that displaced six people and caused extensive damage in a South Salt Lake apartment building early Sunday.

South Salt Lake Fire Department Deputy Chief Kevin Bowman said firefighters responded to a call about 12:30 a.m. at a four-plex located at 3780 S. McCall. Bowman said the fire, which began in the basement, had burned into the second floor and part of the attic by the time responders arrived, but was contained in about 10 minutes.

The six residents present at the time of the blaze had evacuated before fire crews arrived and Bowman said smoke detectors in the units had functioned properly. A Red Cross team responded to the incident and provided clothing and found overnight shelter for the victims.

Bowman said the fire caused about $100,000 in damage.
