Courts will have more options for treating and sentencing drunken drivers under a bill supported by the legislative Transportation Interim Committee Wednesday.

The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Carlene Walker, R-Salt Lake City, clarified requirements for courts that offer so-called "plea-in abeyance" to convicted drunken drivers who participate in highly supervised, intense treatment programs.

The discussion was well-received by legislators, who adopted it as a committee bill to be considered in the 2004 session of Legislature in January.

Amendments to the bill, which has not yet been numbered, require accountability for the treatment providers who work with DUI offenders as part of these court programs.
