A Summit County day-care provider was arrested Wednesday for investigation of child abuse after a 15-month-old in her care was taken to the hospital with injuries police say suggest shaken-baby syndrome.

Maria Abigail Tiscareno, 40, was arrested at her Park City home Wednesday, Summit County Sheriff David A. Edmunds said.

On Friday, Tiscareno called 911 to report that a baby in her care was injured. Paramedics and deputy sheriffs arrived at the scene and found the child had injuries "consistent with shaken-baby syndrome," Edmunds said. He said later discussions with medical personnel indicated the injuries must have been committed in a time period that pointed to Tiscareno as a suspect.

Edmunds said the infant was still alive but is in "bad shape" at a local hospital.

Tiscareno was a licensed day-care provider, Edmunds said.
