1988-89 SEASON: Posts nation's best regular-season record, 28-2 at Ball State. . . . Making $61,000, the 41-year-old is a top candidate for a half-dozen jobs, including Utah, Cincinnati and Duquesne.
SPRING 1989: Joins Southwest Missouri State's Charlie Spoonhour and St. Mary's Lynn Nance as candidates to replace Lynn Archibald. . . . Stanford's Mike Montgomery is said to have turned down a Utah offer.
APRIL 4, 1989: Is introduced by U. athletic director Chris Hill as Utah's 12th head basketball coach. . . . First staff includes hiring assistants Joe Cravens, Donnie Daniels and Jeff Judkins.
OFFSEASON 1989: Is reprimanded by Utah for mentioning "irregular sexual behavior in women's athletics" on a Milwaukee radio talk show.
1989-90 SEASON: Logs first U. win, 100-76 vs. Cal State Stanislaus . . . After a 4-2 start, undergoes septuple-bypass heart surgery and misses the remainder of the season.
OFFSEASON 1990: Returns to the U. in March, his 250 pounds down from 280 but 35 away from his target weight.
OFFSEASON 1991: Signs a five-year contract extension; Hill calls reports of a $225,000 a year "way off." . . . A Taylorsville cul-de-sac is named "Majerus Court." . . . Makes good on promise to run a marathon, needing five hours and 55 minutes at the San Antonio Marathon. Finishes last, but the $39,000 won in wagers with acquaintances for finishing is donated to five charities.
1991-92 SEASON: Is sidelined a game by a urinary-tract infection. . . . Screams obscenities and punches the scorer's table at Wyoming, with the Cowboys' AD demanding an apology and the Wyoming governor turning down a U. fence-mending proposal to dine with Majerus. . . . Apologies for his language and is reprimanded by the WAC. . . . Is mentioned in the postseason as a candidate to replace UNLV's Jerry Tarkanian for a rumored $1 million a year. . . . In the NIT, Utah downs Ball State, Arizona State and Rhode Island before losing 58-55 to Notre Dame in the semifinals — Majerus goes ballistic on a late-game "phantom foul" call with U. up 55-54 with 9.7 seconds left. . . . Utah beats Florida for the NIT's third place.
OFFSEASON 1992: Applies for the State Board of Education in District 8, but is not a finalist.
