County school races heated

As of press time, however, few election results had been released.

That kept Nebo board President Brent Gordon up late, nervously waiting to learn his fate against challenger Randy Boothe in the heated race for the District 3 seat.

"Randy is pretty well-known, so I'm not confident," Gordon said. "I feel OK, but who knows? You never know where the voters are going to go with it."

If he does win, Gordon said he would dedicate himself to overseeing a recent $140 million bond, which will finance the construction of 10 new schools over the next few years.

Those schools are needed to accommodate unparalleled growth in the district, which added two new members to its school board Tuesday night, though winners remained unclear in each race. Incumbent Kaye Westwood ran unopposed.

Due to the new positions, longtime board member Collin Allan had his District 2 post temporarily changed to a two-year seat to even out future elections.

But Allan remained uncertain late Tuesday if he would retain his seat against his opponent, Claudia Stephens, who held a minor lead in one precinct's results.

"If I don't win, I've had a good opportunity and I'm satisfied with what I've done," said Allan, who's served on the board for 24 years.

"I've never worried that much about (elections). If I make it, fine. If I don't, whatever the people want is fine with me."

Provo School District also added two new members to its school board to satisfy a 2003 Utah law that requires districts with more than 10,000 students to have seven elected members on the district's board of education.

Sue Curtis, who ran unopposed, took one seat. The other race between Gloria Wheeler and Mary Ann Christiansen had not been determined at press time, though one precinct gave Christiansen the lead.

Incumbents Richard Sheffield, Darryl Alder and Sandy Packard ran unopposed.

In Alpine School District, it remained unclear at press time if two-term board member Andrea Forsyth would retain her District 7 seat over challenger Kelvin Clayton. Incumbent Guy Fugal and newcomer Debbie Taylor ran unopposed.
