Thompson is back with another album
Singer/songwriter Richard Thompson best known for his work with Fairport Convention and for his appearances on various albums by Crowded House, Bonnie Raitt and Beausoleil is back with his umpteenth solo album, "Sweet Warrior."
Thompson's rich baritone is intact as he addresses the lives of everyday people doing what they can to make it in the modern world. Topics, including post-divorce situations ("Mr. Stupid"), war ("Dad's Gonna Kill Me"), death ("Poppy-Red") and memories of lost loves ("She Sang Angels to Rest"), find their way into Thompson's melodic and sometimes melancholic arrangements. One of the highlights is the catchy "Francesca," a song that addresses the back-story of a prostitute.
The insightful and poetic lyrics of all the songs are guided by the dynamic arrangements that give each subject musical dimensions. Thompson hasn't lost his knack for songwriting. And in this day of overproduction and quick-and-easy recording processes, "Sweet Warrior" is a welcome sound for sore ears.
