Cheap chic: Utah store sells stylish duds for under $20
But unlike recent highly publicized openings for retail icons like Ikea in Draper or the Cheesecake Factory at Fashion Place Mall, the opening of Steve & Barry's first store in Utah was decidedly understated.
But that didn't stop some loyal fans of the discount apparel chain from loading up on its inexpensively priced designer-style clothing.
"We are just absolutely thrilled that Utah has its first Steve & Barry's," said Lehi's Corie Scarbrough. "I've shopped before at the Steve & Barry's at (New York City's) Manhattan Mall. Then to see that it was opening here. I've definitely been waiting."
Nor did Scarbrough consider it much a burden traveling from Lehi to Murray for the store's grand opening.
"Anything for Steve & Barry's," she said, explaining what impresses her is the chain's ability to deliver price and quality everything in the store sells for under $20.
"You feel like you're getting the best fashions designer-type fashions at a fraction of the price," Scarbrough said. "It's just great to come and be able to get a pair of jeans for $15 bucks, compared to going to a department store or the mall and paying $70 or $80. But it's not junk, she said. Items she's bought and worn before wash up nicely.
"Steve & Barry's was founded on the philosophy of offering high-quality merchandise at the lowest possible prices," said Andrew Gilden, manager of public relations for the company in a prepared release.
There are now 215 Steve & Barry's locations in 33 states nationwide. The company features its own designer-type brands endorsed by a host of celebrities, including actresses Sarah Jessica Parker and Amanda Bynes and sports personalities Stephon Marbury, Ben Wallace and Venus Williams.
