Thrillionaires, Chan Brothers are among upcoming headliners

PROVO — Utah County performers and playwrights combine their talents in upcoming performances at the newly inaugurated Covey Center for the Arts, said Danae Friel, marketing director.

The Thrillionaires, an improvisation company that has been performing in a Provo nightclub has been lured away to the Covey Center and will open in the Little Theater on Friday, Jan. 11, with two performances that night and on Jan. 15 Tuesday, Jan. 15, starting at 8 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. On Friday, Jan. 18, the troupe is in the performance hall at 8 p.m. for one show only. Tickets are $10.

The comedy group performs again every Tuesday and Friday in February in the Little Theater at 8 p.m. and 10:15 p.m.

A Black Box Theater series is coming to the Little Theater with plays primarily written by local playwrights, Friel said. It opens Feb. 7 with "Anthology of Love," a group of short, locally written plays compiled by J. Scott Bronson. Tickets are $10.

The Chan Brothers, consisting of Benjamin Chan, a nationally ranked violinist, and his pianist brother, Jonathan, opens Jan. 11 in the performance hall beginning at 7:30 p.m. Recent Brigham Young University graduates, their music is a blend of classical and sacred arrangements. Tickets are $12 general admission and $8 for students and seniors.

Also coming is the Utah Valley Symphony with its "Side by Side Concert." The orchestra, about 80 members, features Hector Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, Franz Haydn's Concerto in D Major and R. Schubert's Symphony No. 5. Tickets are $10 general admission and $8 for students and seniors.

An art exhibit, "Classical Concepts in Fine Art" opens Jan. 4 and runs through Jan. 30 featuring three local artists, David Grant Dean, Rett Ashby and LeRoy Transfield, Friel said. Their opening reception is Jan. 4 from 6-9 p.m. and is free to the public. The gallery, also free of charge, opens Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

BYU's precision and jazz dance group, the Cougarettes, perform Feb. 27 to March 1 with a 7:30 p.m. performance and a Saturday matinee beginning at 2 p.m. The group is the 2007 national champion. Tickets are $10.

The Classical Ballet Academy performs "Hansel and Gretel" with the Nebo Philharmonic on Feb. 22 at 7:30 p.m. with a matinee Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. Engelbert Humperdinck wrote the original opera and symphony. Choreography is by Jennie Creer-King. Tickets are $10 general admission and $7 for children.
