DELTA — The Central Utah Public Health Department says a case of tuberculosis in Millard County has been identified but contained.

Michael Carter, public information officer for the department, confirmed that a male individual has been in isolation for active TB for nearly two months but said the situation has been handled and is under control.

"The male has been under quarantine since Dec. 7. He is being treating for active TB and is responding well to the medication," Carter said.

He said the health department had worked to identify and test people the individual came into contact with.

"He's believed to have had active TB since April 2007, last spring. After an investigation, 75 people were tested. Sixteen came back positive for latent TB. All 16 were adult co-workers. Of the 16, 12 have started treatment, and the remaining four will start by Friday."

Latent TB is not contagious.

"After those tests, we believe we've got everybody he came into contact with. It looks to be well-contained. He's getting back to normal, too."

The individual with active TB, Carter said, could be in isolation for six to nine months, "until he is no longer contagious."
