College: What to consider
• Assess your readiness: Are you ready to take initiative for your academic and spiritual growth (attending class, church, institute, etc.)? Will you be subject to homesickness? Do you make good decisions and choose good friends?
• Missions and marriage: Will you be able to accomplish your spiritual goals? If you choose to serve a mission, will the school accommodate your return? Will there be housing available if you choose to marry as an undergraduate student?
• Locate the institute: Log on to ldsces.org, click on institute, then click on find an institute for the institute locator. It will list the institute, the colleges it serves, the enrollment, a contact name and phone number. You can also submit a request to have information sent to you from that particular institute.
• Make contact: Call the institute director and learn more about the church in the area. Ask to be referred to local priesthood leaders, church members and LDS students and faculty currently at your school of choice.
• Housing arrangements: Find out whether you can choose your own roommate. Ask if there is a housing coordinator in the area ward or branch who can provide some recommendations and referrals. Determine whether there are other LDS students looking for roommates.
• Visit the school with parents: When possible, tour the campus of the school and visit the dorms. Also, locate the area ward or branch and determine if it is conveniently located. Introduce yourself to local priesthood leaders and ward members.
