OGDEN, Utah — Like many Latter-day Saints, Mormon scholar Richard Bushman has been both surprised and bothered by the way media and observers have responded to Mormonism with bigotry in recent years.

In a speech he gave Wednesday at Weber State University, the author of "Joseph Smith: Rough Stone Rolling," said the intolerance he has seen directed toward the faith really brings to light how members are viewed as "not quite first-class citizens."
