French President Nicolas Sarkozy, second from left, inspects the troops during a state visit to Britain's Windsor Castle Wednesday. He mixed elaborate pomp with his impassioned warning that the West must beat the Taliban in Afghanistan no matter the cost. Without specifying numbers, he pledged more French troops for NATO's mission in Afghanistan if Afghans also get more responsibility and there is better coordination of nonmilitary efforts. During Sarkozy's 36-hour trip he will be a guest of Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle, hold talks with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and address Parliament.
