OREM — A trio of local police officers plan to ride in the annual Police Unity Tour in May if they can come up with $3,400 each by April 1.

Officers involved in the 300-mile event ride from New Jersey to the Fallen Officers Memorial at Washington, D.C. They pay their own costs, their airfare, hotel and food as well as shipping fees to get their bikes to Newark, N.J., for the event.

This year Sgt. Randy Crowther from the Orem Police Department is riding for State Corrections Officer Stephen Anderson — killed June 25, 2007, by an inmate.

Officer Greg Olney, also from Orem, will ride for Uintah County sheriff's deputy Kevin Orr — killed in November 2006 when a helicopter he was in hit a power line.

Utah County sheriff's deputy Jeff Wabel will ride for Garfield County sheriff's deputy David C. Jones — killed in 2003 by a passenger in a car Jones stopped for investigation of drunken driving.

For questions or to make donations, contact Sgt. Randy Crowther 229-7252.
