I had been the deacons quorum adviser in the Bonneville Ward, Provo East Stake, since the previous fall, when Janice and I had moved to Provo on my joining BYU's English department faculty. We had rapidly become good friends with the deacons, as the boys spent a part of every Saturday at our home and met in solemn session every Sunday morning.

On a spring Sabbath morning I began what I knew was to be my last lesson with the quorum; I had been called during that week to serve as Bishop Brent C. Lindstrom's second counselor.

After settling that lively bunch a bit — they were always quick with the quips and give-and-take, Steve Taylor being foremost on the uptake — I heard Steve say (my back was turned as I wrote on the chalkboard) that he'd heard I was going to be put in the bishopric that afternoon. I turned and quickly tried to deflect his comment with a half-denial, and Steve followed my deflection only after a deacon-size threat of, "Well, it better not be so, 'cause we'll vote against it" — which I took to mean, "we like you, Cracroft, and don't want you to go."
