A man shot twice last week by Washington County sheriff's deputies was released from Dixie Regional Medical Center on Monday.

Michael D. Loeffel, 37, then was booked into the Washington County Jail on counts including assault against a police officer and drug possession.

Deputies shot Loeffel twice inside a home in Enterprise Thursday evening after police said the man pointed a rifle at them from close range.

Officers were notified of a domestic dispute happening inside a vehicle, and as they approached the car, Loeffel sped away. He stopped at his Enterprise home and ran inside with a woman, police said.

The woman tried to leave, but Loeffel grabbed her and pulled her back inside, police said. Deputies feared for the woman's safety and were able to get her out of the house. The deputies then followed Loeffel inside the home, where police said the man grabbed a rifle and pointed it at the deputies, prompting both to open fire.

Loeffel was taken to the hospital and was released Monday.

Both deputies are on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting.

Loeffel was booked on three counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, a third-degree felony, and misdemeanor counts of unlawful detention, disorderly conduct, obstruction of justice and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
