Through 80 minutes and two 10-minute overtimes, Judge Memorial attacked and attacked but could not deliver the death blow to Ben Lomond.

With the Bulldogs in a shootout, Judge senior Sean Sellwood understood a lot was riding on his kick when it fell to him to fire a shot at goalkeeper Tyler Walters. But the last thing he could thing about was the Bulldogs' season being on the line.

"I had to keep my composure," Sellwood said. "I couldn't let anything settle into my head."

Sellwood's kick found its target - the back of the net - and Judge prevailed over the Scots in a 0-0 game, winning 5-4 in a shootout in the first round of the 3A boys soccer playoffs on Wednesday afternoon.

The Bulldogs will advance to face Delta in the quarterfinal round.

It was in Judge Memorial's best interest to keep Ben Lomond off the scoreboard at Granite High. In regular-season games where the Scots scored at least once, they had posted a 6-1 record.

And the Bulldog defense did an excellent job of keeping Ben Lomond in check. The only problem was that the offense could not create any goals of its own.

"We basically had control of the game," Sellwood said. "We just couldn't put the ball in the net."

If not for a standout effort by Walters, Judge's scoring struggles may not have been as pronounced. He did everything possible to put Ben Lomond over the top — an effort which included contributing with a tying shot midway through the shootout.

The Scots goalkeeper also quickly disposed of Judge's best scoring chance in the first overtime. Bulldog senior Charlie Brennan drove past the defense and found himself one-on-one with Walters in the 95th minute.

Brennan fired the ball on frame, but Walters came up with the save.

Judge kept Ben Lomond on its heels through both halves, dominating possession and dictating tempo. The Bulldogs felt confident if they could control the flow of the game, good things would happen eventually.

"We never looked to defend their style," assistant coach Louis Staley said. "We look to impose our style."
