Rugby teams from Utah have fared well on the national scene at various levels for several years now.

With BYU and Utah Valley State competing in the USA Rugby collegiate playoffs today and Saturday in Stanford, Calif., the tradition of having in-state teams advance far into the playoffs continues.

The Cougars reached the Division I semifinals for the fourth year running, but this year presents a different type of challenge than in past seasons. BYU has to overcome Colorado today at 6 p.m. — a team that beat the Cougars at home 28-22 in February — for the chance to make its third straight finals appearance.

Despite not being in top shape in the loss after taking a hiatus from regular training during the colder months of winter, BYU still has to be wary of a Buffaloes team that has no problem clicking on offense.

Colorado beat Penn State 58-55 in the quarterfinals two weeks ago in a season in which it redeemed itself from last year's woes in which it couldn't win the matches that counted in going 0-4 in league play by an average of just more than four points.

The winner goes on to play either California or St. Mary's on Saturday at 6 p.m. for the title.
