For the past few years, the Sweet Adelines Rocky Mountain Region 8 Convention and Competition have been held in Colorado Springs.

This year, however, the event, featuring more than 700 female singers, will come to Salt Lake City. And it will be hosted by Utah's own Mountain Jubilee Chorus.

"We have people on the Sweet Adelines board," Mountain Jubilee Chorus member Janet Burch said during an interview last week. "We finally were able to convince everyone to come to Utah.

"We've got so many chorus fans here," she said. "And we will be competing at Abravanel Hall. It's such a beautiful building and the acoustics are incredible."

The Rocky Mountain Region 8 competitors include singers from Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, Montana, Kansas and South Dakota, Burch said. "We also have singers who are a part of our choir who live in Colorado. They make the trek every month to rehearse with us. We're lucky to have them with our choir."

Word of the competition coming to Utah was announced to the Mountain Jubilee Chorus a year ago.

"It gave us time to schedule the hall and the hotel," Burch said. "Everyone will be staying at the Marriott downtown. And in addition to the singing on Friday and Saturday, there will be a gathering on Thursday where we will meet old friends and a marketplace."

Burch said each chorus will get a chance to rehearse on the Abravanel Hall stage before the competition. And within each chorus there are stand-out quartets who will compete Friday.

"The choruses will then compete on Saturday," she said. "And the winners and those who garner enough points will then head to Nashville, Tenn., in 2009 for the Sweet Adelines International Competition.

Last year, the Mountain Jubilee Chorus placed eighth overall in the competition held in Calgary, Canada.

"We have six quartets in the Jubilee Chorus," Burch said. "They are wonderful. And we have a total of 102 members in our chorus. At least we did at the last count a few days ago."

Burch said she joined the chorus at the request of a friend.

"She and I sang together a long time ago in (LDS Mutual Improvement Association)," Burch said with a laugh. "She told me that I needed to come to rehearsals. And when my kids grew up and I had some time, I did.

"I fell in love with the music and the costumes and the fact that we have a chance to do some choreography," Burch said. "If there's anything I love as much as singing or more than singing is dancing. And the Mountain Jubilee Chorus has the whole package."
