OREM — When Christina and Joel Heard discovered their 10-day-old daughter had Cornelia de Lange syndrome, they imagined that they would be spending day and night with her with no breaks until they could receive state assistance.

Now 5 years old, their daughter still doesn't speak and has a feeding tube. The couple has been on the Division for Services for People With Disabilities waiting list since their daughter's birth, Christina Heard said. A five-year wait is not uncommon.

But then they learned of Friday's Kids Respite, a nonprofit organization designed to give parents a break at no charge.

"From the first night we left her at Friday's Kids, we knew she was in good hands and would be well taken care of," said Christina Heard. "How wonderful it is to be able to have a date night and let her have a play date at the same time!"

Friday's Kids rents space Thursday and Friday nights at the Kids on the Move building near the Orem Community hospital.

"We get two nights a month," Heard said.

One to two volunteers tend their daughter while a nurse is in the building if any medical issues arise.

Maladies among the children include autism, Down syndrome, brain damage, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, and other rare conditions, said program spokeswoman Amy Powell.
