13-year-old boy arrested in a school break-in
A 13-year-old male junior high school student broke into Truman Elementary school in West Valley City Sunday morning and once inside, caused additional damage and attempted to pilfer school property, police said.
Granite Police Lt. Todd Rasmussen said the young man, who lives in the neighborhood, may have been angry after a possible dispute with his parents.
The youth rifled desks in a classroom in the building, and broke a window to gain access to an office, where he took three cell phones from a cabinet, police said.
Rasmussen said Granite police established a perimeter around the school while the incident was still in progress and were waiting outside when the boy left the building. After seeing police, the youth threw down property he'd removed from the school and hid in some nearby bushes.
Rasmussen said the young man was taken into custody without incident and did not have any previous arrests.
