An SUV plunged off the third level of a parking garage Monday morning, injuring a 51-year-old woman.

The accident happened about 8 a.m. at a parking structure near 200 South and State Street.

"I heard this loud crash," said Dave Robertson, who works in the parking attendant booth. "I thought it was from outside, maybe a car accident on the street."

As he stepped out of the booth, Robertson saw people running down the stairs and then saw the Toyota RAV 4 laying in the well of the parking structure — upside down. He called 911.

"She's alive," Robertson said. "To my surprise, she is."

The SUV's top was smashed in. Robertson said it appeared the woman hit the gas instead of the brake and broke through the protective railing, falling three stories. Firefighters said there were skid marks at the scene, indicating she may have attempted to brake.

The Salt Lake Fire Department's heavy rescue unit was called out to rescue the woman, who was taken to a local hospital.

"She said that all she remembers is going to the grocery store. After that, she doesn't remember anything," Salt Lake Fire Capt. Karleen Montanez said.
