We must stay course

I had a hard time with Don Gale's rant on the Iraq war (May 3). He blamed every economic ill in the country on the Afghan and Iraq wars. I can't believe he really thinks we should have left the Taliban in place in Afghanistan just to save a few bucks. Gale indicates that most knowledgeable observers believe that Iraq will not collapse if we leave. My extensive reading indicates exactly the opposite.

Gale also seems to believe that the $12 billion we are spending each month in Iraq could be used to solve every economic problem we have in the country. Dealing with all the issues he lists would cost hundreds of billions a month. The $12 billion we spend on the war, while a lot of money, is still a very small percentage of our GNP.

The war on terror is indeed a nightmare, and we have had people who have done unspeakable things, but nothing like what the terrorists have done. They kill civilians, women and children with impunity and without remorse. Our level of moral behavior is much higher. We've never flown jetliners filled with innocent people into skyscrapers filled with innocent people. We must not forget that this was initiated by the terrorists. We did not start it, but we must finish it.
