Liberal government is best

The response to my letter describing the death of conservatism (Readers' Forum, April 30) was to distort it beyond recognition. Do I want government to "assert more control over our lives?" No, but when my house is on fire, I want the government — firemen — to put it out. I also think that firemen who believe in firefighting are more likely to be good at it than firemen who believe that putting out fires is part of the problem, not the solution.

Conservatism argues that lowering taxes promotes economic growth. There's no evidence to support this belief. Yet conservatives cling to supply-side dogma like children clinging to a belief in tooth fairies. As for the triumphs of liberalism, I rather like living in a world where the elderly poor are provided for, where children are immunized, educated and protected, where entrepreneurs compete on a level playing field, where highways span the nation, where the food I eat is inspected, the water I drink is potable and the air I breathe is clean. I enjoy the benefits of effective, liberal government. Don't you?
