Salt Lake County library lauded for environmental efforts
A LEED — the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design — designation is a recognition of the building's sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, material selection and indoor environmental quality.
The library qualified at a silver level for factors such as use of recycled materials and xeriscaping, said library spokesman Greg Near.
The library received detailed instructions for being environmentally responsible as part of the certification process, Near said. The building opened Nov. 5, 2005, and replaced an older Draper library.
During a ceremony Thursday, the library at 1136 E. Pioneer Road (12400 South) also received an Excellence in Sustainable Design Merit Award from the Utah Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and a trophy and certificate for participating in the Rocky Mountain Power Blue Sky renewable energy program.
The library benefits from the recognitions because they allow it to further conservation education, Near said.
