GOLF: The BYU women's golf team sits in sixth place at 7-over-par, after the first round of the 2008 NCAA West Regional. The Cougars got off to a strong start as senior Juli Erekson hit back-to-back birdies on holes two and three. Teammates Ashley Childers and Daphne Vines also birdied two shots early on to help BYU to a 295 team score, tied with Michigan State, Stanford and California.
SOFTBALL: BYU recorded its fourth consecutive 40-win season when it split a doubleheader against Colorado State (27-22, 7-11) on Thursday. A three-run homer gave Colorado State a 3-2 win and 11 runs off 14 hits gave BYU (40-18, 12-6) redemption in game two, 11-6.
Utah State
SOFTBALL: Seventh-seeded Utah State was eliminated from the Western Athletic Conference Softball Tournament after getting shutout, 3-0, to fifth-seeded New Mexico State. Three USU seniors ended their seasons catcher Heather Haak, third baseman Amy Schaible and shortstop Tara Evans.
Southern Utah
SOFTBALL: SUU outfielder Trish Clapham has earned a spot on the Academic All-District 8 second team, it was announced Wednesday. Clapham, a starter in 46 of the Thunderbirds' 51 games, has helped SUU to a second seed in this week's Summit League tournament. She carries a .267 batting average with seven doubles and 15 runs scored this season.
Three Southern Utah University softball players have been named to this year's Summit League all-conference team. Centerfielder Rodeo Carli and designated player Karli Jenson both earned first-team recognition, while shortstop Aly Daniels was named to the second team. Carli, a senior from Sandy (Alta HS) led the league in runs scored in conference play (20). She was a second-team selection last year. Jenson, a sophomore from Cedar City, earned her second straight first-team honor. Daniels, a freshman from Puyallup, Wash., finished second in the conference in batting average (.393) and hits (24).
BASEBALL: Southern Utah picked up a key conference victory with a 6-1 win over Centenary College on Thursday. The win snaps a five-game losing skid and moves SUU to 24-23 on the year and 11-9 in Summit League play. Centenary falls to 27-20 and 10-11 in conference.
Utah Valley
TRACK & FIELD: Utah Valley will host the inaugural National Athletic Conference 2008 Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Brigham Young University's Clarence Robison Track today from noon to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Competing against UVSC will be Cal State Bakersfield, Houston Baptist, NJIT, and San Francisco. The schedule of events along with a list of athletes competing and live results can be found at www.runnercard.com.

BASEBALL : At Henderson, Nev., Chad Ellis pitched seven complete innings in the 8-1 win for Salt Lake over Colorado Northwestern. Ryan Bernal hit a three-run home run to extend Salt Lake's lead and Ellis took care of the rest. Salt Lake (34-6) later defeated the No. 2-seed Western Nevada 7-2. Adam Gunn got the win and Shay Star drove in two runs. Salt Lake face either Southern Nevada or Southern Idaho today at 4 p.m.
