Groups discuss proposed $100M utility rate increase

Representatives from Utah's largest electric utility, along with state agencies and consumer advocates met Friday in a closed-door meeting regarding Rocky Mountain Power's proposed $100 million rate increase request.

The rate settlement conference included representatives from the state division of Public Utilities, the Utah Committee for Consumer Services, the Utah Ratepayers Association and the utility. A Deseret News reporter at the meeting was asked to leave by Steven Goodwill, an administrative law judge for the Utah Public Service Commission, who said the meeting was private.

In December 2007, Rocky Mountain Power asked for a $161 million rate increase. That request was scaled back to $100 million in March, after the commission in February ordered the company to resubmit its rate-increase application using new parameters.

Last month, the Committee for Consumer Services recommended to the commission that Rocky Mountain Power receive a rate hike of approximately $8.5 million, far below the utility's revised request of about $100 million. Among the items discussed during the settlement conference Friday were pending administrative actions regarding the proposed rate increase.

A rate hearing is scheduled for May 20 at the Public Service Commission's offices. That meeting is open to the public.
