High school lacrosse: Bountiful, Lone Peak boys tops in Utah lacrosse
The boys A Flight game featured a powerful Bountiful team downing Jordan 12-6.
Mike Fabrizio started the scoring just 18 seconds in to stake Bountiful to a 1-0 lead.
Brent Carlson scored the next two goals in the next three minutes. The Braves' relentless assault continued with Fabrizio punching in two more goals. By the end of the quarter Bountiful led 7-2. Kevin Gee notched both goals for Jordan. By halftime, Bountiful stretched its lead to 9-2 and was well on its way to victory.
The second half started the same as the first, with Fabrizio slinging one in at the 9:53 mark. The Braves continued to pour it on and led 12-3 at the end of the third quarter.
Fabrizio ended up scoring four goals.
"I like to take it one on one," he said.
Coach Marty Wescott acknowledged that his team was aggressive.
"Our first option is to shoot," he said.
The earlier games in the day evoked more emotion because they were more highly contested.
"I just get it on offense and bring it down," Wilkey said.
Coach Randy Stout complimented his kids on their hard work and said they stayed with it after a bit of a slow start.
Woods Cross' Ben Merrill scored four goals in a losing effort.
In the second game of the day, the girls put on an exciting show that went into two overtimes before Murray beat Park City 10-9 to claim the title on a goal by Sharlena Prestwich. The officials examined Prestwich's stick to ensure it was regulation.
Stephanie Palmer was unstoppable for Murray, scoring seven of the 10 goals. She was named game MVP.
Her coach, Jim Williamson, said Palmer's controlling of the draw was the key thing.
"Our hustle made the difference," he added.
Aleisha Matsuura was named season MVP for her defensive prowess.
Park City's Kassie Lemon scored two goals in overtime.
According to the press guide distributed by the Utah Lacrosse Association, lacrosse is the fastest growing sport both in Utah and the country. It is also the longest continually played sport in North America. The UHSAA will vote in 2010 to determine if it will be approved as a sanctioned high school sport.
