4A high school soccer: Contenders eye potential matchups in 4A semis
Bountiful beat Bonneville in the 4A title game a season ago and the Lakers have longed for revenge against their Region 5 rival ever since. The feeling is mutual, considering Bountiful lost to Bonneville twice during the regular season.
Meanwhile, there's also no denying that Utah County soccer fans would love to see top-ranked Springville trade swords with traditional power Mountain View in the 4A championship game. As good as Region 7 was from top-to-bottom in 2008 — and the league featured a lot of overall depth — top-seed Springville and runner-up Mountain View separated themselves as the season progressed, and it would fantastic to watch them trade swords in a winner-take-all finale.
So something's got to give today during the semifinal round of the 4A boys soccer tournament at Woods Cross, and of course there's the possibility that neither matchup will come to fruition.
"For the rivalry, it would be fun to play Springville again," said Graham, "but if we get to the state championship, we'll be happy to play whomever."
Graham and Mountain View will meet Bonneville at noon today, while Plank and Bountiful will follow against Springville at 2 p.m. Both semifinals promise to be very good.
Today's first semifinal contest pits last year's runner-up in 5A (Mountain View) against last year's runner-up in 4A (Bonneville).
Both teams lost several of the key components that led those teams but have gotten important contributions from the guys that returned, as well as from the newcomers.
Aside from perhaps Brighton, nobody in recent years has consistently been better defensively than Mountain View, and the Bruins will look to use that obvious strength to slow down Bonneville's fantastic possession-oriented attack.
Meanwhile, both Springville and Bountiful head into their semifinal encounter against one another on the right track.
After enduring a tight 1-0 win over Sky View on Day 1 of the postseason, Springville hit its stride by edging Pine View 4-2 in what was a thrilling quarterfinal contest. Bountiful, on the other hand, was solid from start to finish in both of its opening two playoff games.
