CENTERVILLE — Police have arrested a man they said tried to burn down a house.

Officers received numerous calls along Rolling Hills Drive early Saturday morning about a man going from house to house, banging on doors and windows. The window of one home was smashed, and the man smashed his way into another home where the residents were on vacation, police said.

"Our officers were en route," Centerville Police Lt. Paul Child said Monday. "He turned on all the burners on a stove, went into the garage and removed the gas cap from a vehicle. It leads us to believe he was trying to start the home on fire."

When officers arrived, they heard the sound of glass smashing and went into the house.

"He ran from them and dove through a window," Child said.

Officers chased the man and took him into custody. Nephi Kody Chato, 18, was taken to a local hospital to be treated for cuts on his arms and legs and then booked into the Davis County Jail for investigation of burglary, criminal mischief, intoxication, disorderly conduct and attempted aggravated arson.
