SCERA is bringing updated 'Footloose' to life in Orem
Based on the hit movie musical, "Footloose" is designed as an explosively fast-paced production highlighted by hip choreography and an Oscar-nominated musical score.
The story revolves around Ren, a high school senior who moves from Chicago to a small town and decides to fight a ban on dancing imposed by a preacher determined to control the town's young people.
"We are using a script that has been retooled within the last six months, which really adds to the show," Johnson said. "Some music has been added that supports the story, while keeping the music 'Footloose' is famous for."
Hits include "Almost Paradise," "Holding Out for a Hero," "Never," "I'm Free," "Somebody's Eyes," "Let's Hear it for the Boy" and "Footloose."
"One of the changes in this script is a shift of theme that includes a full circle of forgiveness, which adds new depth, and I believe strength, to the show," Johnson said.
He selected Krystyna Davies as the preacher's daughter, Ariel, based on a great voice and her urban, trendsetter style.
Other leads include A.J. Nielsen as Willard, Summerisa Bell as Rusty, and Sarah Shelley as Vi Moore.
Kellie Messerly is the choreographer, Korianne Johnson is the music director, Marnie Conklin is the costume designer and David Whitlock is the set designer.
The set is based on a theme of crossroads expressing conflicting roles of Chicago's urban energy versus the feel of rural Bomont, Texas. The set uses a variety of road signs to express the crossroads feel.
"I guess you could call it 'Rebel Without a Cause Meets the '90s,"' Johnson said.
