Teens injured when tour bus wrecks near Bryce Canyon
The Utah Highway Patrol said the accident happened around noon Thursday on state Route 12 in Red Canyon. For some reason, the bus left the roadway and tumbled down an embankment, landing on its top, said UHP trooper Cameron Roden.
Garfield County Sheriff's spokeswoman Becki Bronson said some of the teenagers on the bus were knocked unconscious, but none of the injuries were life-threatening. The injured were transported to Garfield Memorial Hospital in Panguitch where they were being evaluated.
"Some of the injured are reported to be wearing neck braces, back braces or bandages, but no broken bones or puncture wounds were reported to the sheriff's office," she said in an e-mail.
The bus was carrying 47 teenagers and six counselors. They were part of the Rein Teen Tour-The Great Adventure Tour, from various locations on the East Coast, such as New York and Florida, Bronson said.
"The teens and their leaders camped last night at Zion National Park and were heading to Bryce Canyon National Park for a day hike when the accident occurred," Bronson said.
The bus itself was towed to Ruby's Inn near Bryce Canyon National Park. The UHP is investigating.
