Historical significance
As a teenager, a Smithfield resident visited Carthage Jail in Nauvoo, Ill. in 1973 with his parents. Although he has traveled there since, one image stands out in his mind from that first visit.
The floor of Carthage Jail was blood-stained.
“It left a deep impression on me,” said Roger Manning, a ninth-generation Mormon.
