Socialism hurting America

I could not agree more with F.T. Gardiner (Readers' Forum, July 16) concerning communism and socialism. To me, the only way these two political systems differ is in the way they are instigated. They are both godless and restrict personal freedoms to a huge degree. I have heard it preached that the aim of the communists is for everyone to be equal. Equality? Yes, equality for everyone in poverty and misery.

We have many socialist programs in our country, all in the name of compassion. We are capable of compassion on our own as citizens without government redistribution of our resources. I challenge people to read the stories of those who have lived under the harsh circumstances of these dictatorships and see how well it worked for them. Then, perhaps, we would be a little more concerned about what is happening in America.
