CHICAGO — Bobby Jenks was activated from the 15-day disabled list Friday and declared himself ready to return to the closer's role for the Chicago White Sox.

Jenks went on the DL on July 9 with bursitis near his left (non-pitching) shoulder. He hasn't pitched in the majors since June 29. He did throw in two minor league rehab games during the All-Star break.

"Hopefully, he is healthy. He threw a couple of games and he's fine. Hopefully, he don't have any setbacks and we are going to use him the way we've been using him the last couple of years," manager Ozzie Guillen said.

The 6-foot-3, 275-pound Jenks is 2-0 with a 1.95 ERA and 18 saves in 21 chances this season.

"No pain," Jenks said, adding that his rehab outings accomplished what he needed. "My biggest concern was making sure my control was there.,

To make on the 25-man roster for Jenks, the White Sox optioned right-handed pitcher D.J. Carassco to Triple-A Charlotte on Thursday.

UPTON PUT ON DL: The Arizona Diamondbacks placed right fielder Justin Upton on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained oblique muscle Friday night, making room for newly acquired first baseman Tony Clark. The Diamondbacks sent minor league pitcher Evan Scribner to the San Diego Padres for Clark, who played three seasons for Arizona before signing with the Padres as a free agent.

ORTIZ HITS 2ND HOMER IN REHAB: Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz hit his second homer in as many games of his minor league rehabilitation assignment with the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox on Friday night. Ortiz, recovering from a wrist injury, came to bat in the fifth inning with Pawtucket leading Toledo 3-1 and runners on second and third and two outs. Anastacio Martinez tried to slip a 1-1 fastball by Ortiz on the outside corner but the AL All-Star designated hitter belted a three-run homer to left to give Pawtucket a 6-1 lead.

SEXSON IN YANKEES' LINEUP: Richie Sexson finalized his contract with the New York Yankees on Friday and was immediately plugged into the starting lineup against Oakland left-hander Greg Smith. The Yankees signed the big first baseman who was released by Seattle last week. Sexson slumped badly against right-handed pitching with the Mariners, but hit .344 with five home runs in 71 at-bats against lefties this year. He came through right away for New York, hitting a two-out RBI single in his first at-bat.

FREEL TO HAVE SURGERY: Reds outfielder Ryan Freel will have surgery on Wednesday to repair a torn tendon that attaches to the bottom of his right hamstring. Freel went on the disabled list on June 4 after he injured the hamstring. It's unclear how long he will need to recover from the surgery.
