A multistate E. coli outbreak traced to recalled beef has at least one case in Utah.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the Utah case is one of 49 lab-confirmed cases of the bacterial infection linked to the outbreak. The CDC says 41 of the cases are in Michigan and Ohio. The illnesses began May 27.

Utah Department of Health spokeswoman Charla Haley says the person who got sick in Utah developed symptoms in June and was hospitalized. Haley says the person didn't know for certain if he or she had eaten recalled beef.

The outbreak has been traced to beef sold in Kroger supermarkets in Michigan and Ohio. The Kroger Co. last month recalled ground beef sold in Michigan and Ohio, then this month expanded it to include other states, including Smith's stores in Utah. Nebraska Beef Ltd. supplied the meat, ultimately recalling 5.3 million pounds of beef.
