Students at Escalante Elementary School are seeing green — a phenomenon that soon will spread to other schools in Salt Lake City School District.

Kicking off a project funded by an $83,000 grant from Lowe's, education officials, along with representatives of the mayor's and governor's office, cut a big green ribbon to celebrate the construction of a greenhouse on the school lawn Tuesday morning.

"It is a fabulous contribution to our community," said Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker.

The greenhouse is the first of a dozen that will be built at schools in Salt Lake district with the goal of getting students enthusiastic about science. The hope is to boost the number of young people entering careers in the life sciences and biotechnology.

"Science doesn't just exist in a classroom," said Tami Goetz, state science adviser with the governor's office.

The Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation grant was given to the Salt Lake Education Foundation, the nonprofit fundraising arm of Salt Lake district.
