Carbon High School principal Greg Stansfield announced the hiring of Leo Paur as the school's new head football coach Wednesday afternoon and shunned speculation that the high school football program was ever in jeopardy of being canceled.

"We are not letting the program die. I have the best interest of the Carbon kids at heart," said Stansfield.

Paur currently resides in Salt Lake City, but Stansfield indicated he was in the process of moving.

"The administrators of Carbon High felt we needed to have a change of direction in the football program," said Stansfield.

Former coach Tim Tiller was informed of his firing Monday afternoon. He was only with the program for one year, finishing with a 2-7 record. Despite anticipated lower numbers this year, he was optimistic about the upcoming season, with nine returning starters on each side of the ball.

Carbon is scheduled to open the 2008 season on Aug. 22 at home against Duchesne.
