PROVO — BYU received its 13th commitment for the class of 2009 Thursday night when an offensive lineman from Texas decided to end his recruitment before his high school season began.

Fono Vakalahi is a 6-foot-4, 340-pound offensive guard who has scholarship offers from Baylor and the Cougars with recruiting interest from Texas A&M, Texas, Virginia Tech, UNLV and Hawaii.

"I called up coach (Steve) Kaufusi today and asked if he could get in touch with coach Mendenhall. I committed to him. I wanted to get this out of the way so I could give my full attention to the season, we start up three-a-days on Monday," said Vakalahi.

The big Tongan attended BYU's junior day where he met with Mendenhall and discussed his future and a role on the Cougar team.

"I just fit in, it's a place I can meet all of my goals and progress as a man," said Vakalahi.

He will be a senior at Bryan High School this fall. "We are supposed to be pretty good this year if everything falls into place," said Vakalahi, who is playing center but could see action as a guard in college.
