PROVO — Police arrested an Eagle Mountain man who they say hit and threw his 13-year-old stepson to the ground for not finishing his chores.

Investigators with the Utah County Sheriff's Office got a report from a mother who was worried her son had been assaulted by her husband, said detective Mike Rutsch.

The alleged abuse had occurred around July 24, but the boy had been too afraid to tell anyone for several days. When he finally told his mom, she took her boy and her other children and left the state, Rutsch said. She then informed law enforcement of the alleged abuse.

After Rutsch learned about the allegations, he asked police in a different state to conduct an interview of the boy.

In the interview, the boy said that he had been in his room when his stepfather came in, upset that he hadn't finished a chore he'd been assigned, according to a police affidavit filed in 4th District Court. He said his stepfather hit him in the stomach, causing "great pain." The stepfather left the room, and the boy told police he began to cry.

A short time later, the stepfather returned and asked why the boy was crying. The boy said it was because he had been hit in the stomach, according to the affidavit. At that point, the boy said his stepfather picked him up, lifted him off the ground and threw him to the floor, causing a fracture to his right arm.

Doctors examined the boy and conducted X-rays, which confirmed the fracture, Rutsch said.

"His treatment is going well," Rutsch said. "I think he's out of a cast right now."

Craig Perkins, 34, was arrested Tuesday afternoon and booked into the Utah County Jail for investigation of child abuse. Rutsch said Perkins was cooperative when officers came to talk with him Tuesday, but invoked his right to speak with an attorney.
