Blaze QB Germaine opts for free agency

Utah Blaze record-setting quarterback Joe Germaine signed a five-year contract prior to the 2008 season, the longest in Arena Football League history. Yet, now he is a free agent.

That's because Germaine's contract included an opt-out clause if Danny White did not remain as the Blaze coach. White resigned after the 2008 season and was replaced by Blaze assistant Ron James. Germaine, who's infant son had heart surgery in Arizona during last season, has said he would like to play closer to his Phoenix-area home for the Rattlers, if possible.

The Blaze, meanwhile, could still work out an agreement with Germaine to keep him in Utah. The free agency period in the AFL begins Oct. 22. If Germaine goes elsewhere, the Blaze could turn to three-year backup Jason Gesser or seek another starting QB on the free agent market.
