SOLDIER HOLLOW — The 2A State Golf Championship looked like a replay from last year — Rowland Hall dominated.

However, South Summit's Taylor Haws carded rounds of 70 and 75 over the two-day tournament to walk off with the individual low-medalist trophy.

"My putting wasn't as good as yesterday," said Haws, but he played well enough to defeat last year's champion, Carson Huiskamp of Rowland Hall, by seven strokes. Huiskamp finished second at 152, and five of his teammates were among the next seven finishers.

Winged Lion coach Shawn MacQueen was proud of the way his players battled.

"We didn't play our best," he said, "but I was pleased with the way we responded" after struggling. "The Gold course jumped up and got a bunch of us."

MacQueen praised South Summit's squad and explained, "We competed with them all through region. It has raised our game."

He only loses two players from this year's team and said he has three good freshmen who played with them most of the year. Haws is only a sophomore for South Summit but was very humble, not saying much about his win.

However, his coach, Troy Coil had plenty to say about him.

Story continues below

"On the first hole yesterday," said Coil, "he triple bogeyed but then came back with six straight birdies. His temperament is so even, I don't ever know whether he just made a bogey or a birdie."

Coil noted that Haws putts using a non-conventional cross-handed grip, but he said, "If I were to put money on any kid in 2A, he would be the one. His putting gets him out of trouble a lot.

"If you throw out his golf game, he is an incredible kid. He is mature and well-mannered."
