Avoid car burglary, lock your doors, Layton police remind

LAYTON — After reviewing 153 vehicle burglaries over the past three months here, police have determined more than half the burglaries could have been avoided if the windows were closed and the doors locked.

Layton Police Lt. Quinn Moyes said officers have reviewed all 153 car burglaries that occurred from July to September. They discovered that in 55 percent of the burglaries, the car windows were down or the doors were unlocked.

Most car burglaries are crimes of opportunity, Moyes said. Locking the car doors greatly reduces a person's chance of being victimized, he said.

He also reminds people to not leave keys in an unattended car or leave wallets and other valuables inside a car in plain view. He also advised people to park in well lighted areas.
