Benefit to assist leukemia patient
SOUTH JORDAN A fundraiser for an 8-year-old boy who has been fighting terminal leukemia for more than a year is being held today at a restaurant here.
For 15 months, Trent DuVal has been battling the disease. Last Friday, doctors allowed him to go home from the hospital, but Trent is not expected to survive.
The boy and his family have kept a blog about his battle with cancer at www.trentduval.blogspot.com.
On his latest blog entry on Saturday, Trent talked about how he was having "so much fun" at home doing things with his family and eating "the fast food I have wanted for so long," even though his body can't handle much at one time.
"I am not in pain and still am making my family laugh," he said.
Trent tried to assure all his family and friends that everything would be OK. But in a heart-wrenching entry, Trent also talked about what he knew lies ahead.
"I will not be in any more pain or hurt, my family will also be OK. I will miss them terribly but they tell me time is different so I will have faith in that. To all my little friends, please know I will miss you and await the time I can see you again."
Trent also asks everyone "not to be angry with Heavenly Father. ... It is in his plan I return to him, my time is over and I am ready to go. Please know I did not give up. I would continue to fight if it was what the Lord wanted, please be at peace, all will be well."
"He is a little fighter. He is a sweet kid," said family friend Jenny Goodrich. "He is so concerned about how this is affecting everyone else."
The mood around the DuVal house has been calm, she said. The family is just happy for the time they get to spend with him.
Trent got to attend part of the BYU football game Saturday. Today, he and his family were having a family picture taken.
To help with the large medical expenses the family has incurred over the past year, Chick-fil-A is holding a fund-raiser today. The restaurant at its South Jordan location will donate 20 percent of all the day's revenues to the DuVal family. Anyone making a $10 donation will receive a coupon for a free sandwich. A silent auction will be held from noon until 7 p.m. with all proceeds going to the family.
The family also hopes to have a trust fund set up by later this week.
