High school football: Playoff seeds up for grabs in 2A games

As Juab coach Mike Bowring quickly pointed out, this week isn't do-or-die time for his unbeaten Wasps.

Their goals are much loftier than simply trying to win a region championship, so they're not going to put all their eggs into one basket.

Having said that, however, it's also pretty clear that much will be on the line for Class 2A's elite teams, including top-ranked Juab, as they attempt to position themselves for the upcoming 2A tournament.

Because Class 2A ends its regular season a week earlier than the bigger classifications — the top four teams in 2A get a bye next week, while the others participate in play-in games — this week represents the final chance for schools to move up or down in the standings.

And what a week it promises to be, considering top-ranked Juab will travel to No. 4 North Summit to decide the 2A north championship and that fifth-ranked South Sevier will travel to No. 2 San Juan to decide the 2A south championship.

"We're excited," Bowring said of his team, echoing the sentiments of the other coaches in his classification.

From the opening week of 2008, which saw Juab come from behind against Morgan, the Wasps have done everything that's been asked of them, and they'll look to close the regular season with a win over the defending 2A champs.

That obviously won't be an easy task, but if anybody's up to it, it's Juab.

"This is just a special of group of kids," said Bowring, who praised the leadership of his senior-heavy team.

If North Summit manages to beat Juab this week, it will likely force a three-way tie atop the 2A north region, assuming No. 3 Manti takes care of business against Gunnison.

Meanwhile, there will be just as much at stake in Class 2A's other league.

San Juan has quietly racked up an unblemished 8-0 record, but it must defeat South Sevier at home to avoid sharing the 2A south title with the Rams while handing them the league's No. 1 seed via a tie-breaker.

Expect San Juan to face a highly motivated opponent that finds itself in unfamiliar territory.

Juab, North Summit and San Juan are all well-known commodities, but South Sevier coach Travis McAllister pointed out it's been a while since his Rams have been in this kind of position.

"We haven't played for a region championship in a long time, so (the players) are pretty excited," he said.

TOP 25 WATCH: On the heels of a 21-14 upset win over Sky View, No. 11 Bountiful was the biggest positive mover in this week's Deseret News Top 25 prep football rankings.

The 6-2 Braves climbed seven spots from 18 to 11, while their opponent, Sky View, plummeted seven spots to 9 to 16.

The week's other big upset, Morgan's win over defending 3A champ Logan, produced the biggest movement of any single team as the Logan Grizzlies dropped a whopping nine spots from No. 11 to No. 20.

Morgan, on the other hand, debuted in the top 25 rankings with the win.

SHUTOUT STREAK FINALLY OVER: Delta's amazing in-state shutout streak finally came to an end when Emery scored in the fourth quarter of the Rabbit's convincing 40-7 win last Friday.

Up until that point, Delta hadn't allowed a point against Utah teams in 23 quarters of play this season.
