Baseball notes: Fines given out for NLCS Game 3 fracas
Kuroda threw a pitch behind Shane Victorino's head in the third inning Sunday, apparently retaliation for Philadelphia's Brett Myers throwing behind Ramirez in Game 2. Benches and bullpens cleared, and plate umpire Mike Everitt immediately warned both teams. There were no ejections.
Kuroda was fined $7,500, Ramirez was docked $2,500, first-base coach Mariano Duncan got $1,000 and third-base coach Larry Bowa $500, Dodgers manager Joe Torre said.
Victorino was fined $2,500 and first-base coach Davey Lopes and reliever J.C. Romero $1,000 each, according to Phillies manager Charlie Manuel.
Asked about his penalty, Ramirez said, "That's fine."
"I don't care. It's worth it," Dodgers catcher Russell Martin said.
Torre had a much different opinion.
"I think it's ridiculous," he said before the Dodgers and Phillies played in Game 4. "I guess the time of year is what enhances the price. I'm not sure what kind of a message this was."
PUJOLS HAS ELBOW SURGERY: Albert Pujols had elbow surgery Monday and the St. Louis Cardinals star is expected to be ready for spring training.
The 2005 NL MVP underwent a 25-minute outpatient procedure to relieve nerve irritation in his right elbow, which had led to numbness, tingling in his ring finger and pinkie, weakness in his grip and pain along the inside of the forearm. George Paletta, the team physician who performed the surgery, said Pujols experienced those symptoms over the last month of the season.
The surgery Pujols had was not the reconstructive procedure that has long been discussed. Such an operation might have sidelined Pujols, whose .357 average ranked second in the major leagues last year, for the first half of next season. Now it is hoped the 28-year-old slugger won't require that procedure.
INDIANS' HAFNER TO HAVE SHOULDER SURGERY: Indians designated hitter Travis Hafner will undergo arthroscopic surgery Tuesday on the strained right shoulder that kept him on the disabled list for more than three months.
Noted orthopedic specialist James Andrews examined Hafner in Birmingham, Ala., on Monday and will perform the surgery.
