VOLLEYBALL: Salt Lake Community College defeated Eastern Utah College in three sets with scores of 25-17, 25-19, 27-25 Friday night, improving the overall record 24-7 overall and 4-0 in SWAC play.
Salt Lake Community College got strong contributions from sophomores Tamara da Silva, Jenika Bird and freshmen Whitney Nilson and MyKelle Webster. da Silva had six aces and six kills, and Bird had six kills. Webster was the Bruins' setter for the match and wound up with 24 assists on the night. The last Bruin to be noted on her individual play was Nilson whom had 9 kills in the win.
Utah
SWIMMING: The Ute women defeated the San Diego State Aztecs 168-132 to begin conference competition on Saturday. This is the eighth straight victory over the Aztecs for the Utes.
The Utes continued their dominance in the Fly events, sweeping the top three spots in the 100 Fly with Hannah Caron taking first with a time of 55.08, Beth Gunderson taking second with a time of 57.64 and Jen Fredsall finishing third with a time of 58.32. A Ute has finished in the top spot in every Fly event this season so far. Caron also finished first in the 200 Fly (2:03.21) and second in the 200 Breast (2:23.30) and Gunderson placed in the top spot in the 200 Back (2:04.28). Gunderson also finished second in the 100 Back (57.94).
VOLLEYBALL: Utah senior middle blocker Emillie Toone was named Mountain West Conference Co-Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. This is the first such honor of Toone's career.
Toone led Utah to two conference wins last week as the Utes took sole possession of second place in the MWC standings. In two matches, she averaged 2.71 kills, 2.14 blocks and 3.93 points per set. Thursday against UNLV, Toone registered eight kills on 14 attempts and committed just two errors for a .429 percentage. She also tied for the match high with six blocks against the Rebels. In the Utes' 3-1 win over San Diego State Saturday, Toone collected 11 kills, nine blocks, and converted 11 kills on 17 attempts for a .471 hitting percentage.
Utah State
SOCCER: Sophomore forward Lauren Hansen has been named both the Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week and the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week it was announced on Monday. The USU weekly award is voted on by a state media panel.
Hansen, a sophomore forward from Camano Island, Wash. (Stanwood HS), had three points in the Aggies' wins against Idaho and Boise State over the weekend. The striker scored her first game-winning goal of the season in a 2-0 win over the Broncos off a header in the 70th minute. She also assisted on Utah State's second goal in a 4-0 victory against the Vandals. Hansen helped the Aggies start 2-0 in conference play for the first time in program history and now leads the team in points scored with 12. This marks the first time Hansen has garnered Player of the Week honors.
Weber State
SOCCER: Weber State's senior Hayley McCoy was named the Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week as Portland State's goalkeeper Cris Lewis was named Defensive Players of the Week.
McCoy scored two goals on Sunday to lead Weber State to a 2- 1 double overtime win against Eastern Washington, keeping the Wildcats atop the Big Sky standings following the opening weekend of league play.
