Centerville to hear 2 appeals from Wal-Mart
The standing Board of Adjustments is composed of five city residents appointed by the City Council to hear appeals from Planning Commission decisions. The meeting, while public, is not a public hearing and therefore no public comments will be taken, said City Manager Steve Thacker.
The City Council will hear the third appeal by Wal-Mart concerning its subdivision plan, but no date for the hearing has been set.
Thacker said members of the Board of Adjustments have had appeals documents for at least a week in preparation for the meeting. He doesn't expect the board to make a decision Wednesday because they have put a continuation of the matter on their Oct. 13 agenda.
The question of allowing a Wal-Mart Supercenter in Centerville has been hotly debated since it was proposed earlier this year. During several Planning Commission and City Council meetings, throngs of residents showed up with the majority expressing disapproval.
Cory Snyder, Centerville's community economic development director, and his staff recommended to the Planning Commission they approve the project, based on the total project meeting or being able to mitigate all of the elements for the conditional use permit.
If the Board of Adjustments and the City Council deny Wal-Mart's appeals, the company could take its case to district court, Snyder said.
Wal-Mart spokesman Eric Berger said the company has made a significant investment in time and resources in its Centerville project, and it will pursue all options available.
