The federal government has announced it will provide another $100 million — including nearly $1 million to Utah — to help citizens with their heating bills this winter.

Utah will receive $850,778 in emergency contingency funds through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

"These funds will make a positive difference for many low-income families in Utah," said Mike Leavitt, Health and Human Services Secretary and former governor of Utah.

Nationally, almost 5 million low-income households receive LIHEAP assistance each year. According to a Health and Human Services press release, states have already received $1.3 billion in funds in the first quarter of fiscal year 2006.
