McGovern to visit UVSC, give anti-hunger speech
McGovern's presentation will also include a video by another former senator and presidential candidate, Bob Dole.
Since co-founding the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program 30 years ago, the two men have worked to eliminate hunger and poverty as impediments to peace.
Their organization has provided more than 16.5 million meals to children worldwide since then.
McGovern, a World War II veteran, began his political career when president John F. Kennedy named him as the first director of the Food for Peace program in 1960. The success of that program vaulted him into the U.S. Senate in 1962, where he served on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during the 1970s.
After retiring from the Senate, McGovern served in an ambassador-level position at the United Nations, as the U.S. Director of the U.N. Agencies on Food and Agriculture.
His address will be the first in the inaugural "Dialogues on Peace and Justice at UVSC."
