Springville's going green
Voluntary curbside recycling begins with 130 customers
The program is the culmination of a grassroots effort that grew large enough to win the unanimous support of the City Council.
"It's been about a year in the making, and it just started with a citizen base coming to the city and asking us to look into it," said John Gleave, Springville's community relations administrator.
The list of citizens interested in supporting a curbside recycling program eventually grew to about 400, and the city put out a request for proposals from companies that could provide the service.
Ace Disposal, which runs curbside recycling programs in North and South Salt Lake, West Valley, West Jordan and Alpine, to name a few, won the bid to provide the service.
"They came in with pricing that we just couldn't turn down," Gleave said.
Ace will provide all subscribers with a 95-gallon bin, the same size as residents' garbage bins, and do collection once every two weeks. Residents do not need to sort their recyclables, and a list of acceptable items is available at the Springville city Web site, www.springville.org.
Payment is due in full at the start of the agreement.
More than 130 people have signed up for the service so far.
"We initially told the city we wouldn't start service until we had 400 people signed up, but we decided we need to get it started," said Richard Hamik, sales manager for Ace Disposal.
Springville gave Ace the list of 400 people who had expressed an interest in curbside recycling, and Hamick said the response as his company has contacted those people has been "almost universally positive."
Most of those contacted requested more information, and as the start date has drawn closer, the contracts have been pouring in, Hamick said.
Hamick said stepping up participation rates can be a slow process and is mostly dependent on getting the word out.
"It's a very easy program once you get started," he said. "It's a good program, and I encourage people to try. I'm confident that those who are starting next week will stay with it."
